Working Remotely From Colombo: A Digital Nomad's Guide
Sri Lanka gets plenty of attention for its beaches and surf towns, but if you work remotely, Colombo is the practical base: the fastest internet in the country, real infrastructure, an international airport nearby, and living costs well below most remote-work hubs in Asia. Here's what you actually need to know to work from here.
Internet: good, if you set yourself up right
Colombo has solid fiber coverage and 4G/5G mobile data is cheap by international standards. That said, cafés with genuinely reliable Wi-Fi and power sockets are hit and miss, and occasional power interruptions are a fact of life in Sri Lanka. The fix is simple: work somewhere with enterprise fiber and backup connectivity. (Coworking spaces exist for exactly this reason — HUB9 runs enterprise-grade fiber with a redundant backup line at both locations.)
Where to work
A hot desk day pass at HUB9 is Rs. 2,000 (about US$6–7) and gets you a full day of air conditioned workspace, fast internet, printing, and unlimited tea and coffee — either at Catalyst in Colombo 7 near the leafy embassy district, or Nest in Colombo 8, a quieter residential side of the city. Staying longer? A dedicated desk gives you your own permanent spot with 24/7 access — handy if your meetings run on US or European time zones and you need somewhere safe and air conditioned at 11pm.
SIM cards and mobile data
Grab a local SIM on arrival — Dialog and Mobitel are the major networks, both offer tourist packages with generous data, and coverage in Colombo is excellent. Mobile data here is among the cheapest in the world, so a data package as tethering backup costs almost nothing.
Getting around
Ride-hailing apps (PickMe is the local favourite, and Uber operates too) make Colombo easy — a tuk-tuk across town costs a few hundred rupees. Both HUB9 locations are central: Colombo 7 and Colombo 8 sit in the middle of the city, close to cafés, supermarkets, and restaurants for lunch breaks.
Costs at a glance
- Hot desk day pass: Rs. 2,000 (~US$6–7) per day, everything included
- Dedicated desk: Rs. 23,500/month for your first 2 months (then Rs. 28,500) with 24/7 access
- Mobile data: among the cheapest globally; tourist SIM packages are inexpensive
- Tuk-tuk rides around central Colombo: typically a few hundred rupees with PickMe
- Lunch near Colombo 7/8: anywhere from a few hundred rupees at a local spot to café prices
Visas
Most nationalities can obtain a Sri Lanka tourist visa (ETA) easily online, and extensions are possible. Visa rules change, so check the official Sri Lanka immigration site for current conditions before you plan a longer stay.
The community factor
The underrated part of working from Colombo is the people. Sri Lanka's startup and freelance scene is small enough to be genuinely welcoming — spend a week at a coworking space here and you'll know half the room. HUB9's two locations are rated 4.6★ and 4.8★ on Google, largely because of that community feel.
Try it for a day
The easiest way to test Colombo as a base is a single day pass. Message Sharon on WhatsApp (+94 777 292 950), tell her when you're coming, and there'll be a seat, fast Wi-Fi, and a good cup of tea waiting.
